That’s what I owe after a master’s degree, doctoral degree, and a post-doc certificate. I ran from my master’s degree loans during a rough time in my life but stepped up to my responsibilities thanks to a very nice loan officer who called me about a month before I was due to go into default. I went back to school to better myself, with plans of providing a better way for my family; at the time, the average per capita income in our town was just around $25,000. With a master’s degree I was making less than twice that. With the debt I currently have, it would take me two years to earn what I owe for my education loans IF I didn’t pay my mortgage, utilities, or put gas in the car to travel the 75 miles round trip per day to go to work to earn the paycheck. I live in the second poorest city in the nation, San Bernardino CA and work at a Christian higher education institution. My loans are in forebearance until March, at which point that number above will be larger. I pray for a miracle that will allow me to come from under this mountain of debt before I die.
