Sallie Mae outsources jobs, screws the American...
My first loan was taken out in 1995. I had to take more loans out to keep my job as a teacher in 2002. For years, I had to defer my loans because I was living hand to mouth. Then the economy took a dump, and guess what? There aren’t any teaching jobs available. My last job as a teacher was in 2007. If it weren’t for my husband’s income, I’d starve. The last time I logged...

From Julia
When I was getting my degree in May 1993 at The Academy of Art in San Francisco, my husband was leaving me…He was a jazz pianist who, after 9 years didn’t want to be married to me or anyone. He was leading a double life. I was devastated then. HOWEVER, this was the best thing that could of happened to me because I became a very independent and strong woman. To survive, I went back...

I was tricked into signing for a loan that I thought was only a grant from the federal government for $3,400 in approximately 1985. All the money went directly to the school. After attending the stenography school in San Francisco for 2 months, the school closed down. We all, (students) should up for school and the doors were locked. The students had no prior warning. I tried to let the federal...

I borrowed $34,000 in private loans from Sallie Mae in 1999. I was 19 years old and borrowed this $ on the advice of a financial advisor at the school that I was about to enroll. In 2001 I failed 1 class and was told that I would need to seek further financial assistance in order to retake the class and continue my education. Sallie Mae would not lend me any more $ and I ended up dropping out....

Banks got bailed out, students got sold out
I work with the homeless population of Boston. Every month I pay the same amount in student loan repayment as I do in rent. I am on a twenty-year repayment plan. Right now my principal balance is about $40,000. By the time I finish paying this off, I will have paid about $120,000. I went to a state school, paying in-state tuition, for my four-year degree.

My Lifetime mortgage of student loan debt
I’m nearly 65 years old and owe $120K of student loan debt. My original loan was $40,000. I can only pay $600 a month and so my interest accrues. I will never be able to pay it off and can only afford enough each month to not increase the principal. Thus by the time I’m in my 80s, when after 25 years the loan is foregiven, I will still owe the IRS taxes on $120,000 which could mean I...
