Borrowed $16 K, now private company wants $160 K
After paying for and working for and throughout my education from BA through MA, I finally had to borrow $16,000 for my PhD. I have paid at least $1000, and now owe $160,000. A private company bought and consolidated everything & have never accepted my offer of $100/month payments. I have defaulted in despair. All my tax returns for years have gone straight to the private company. It took me several years after my PhD to get a job in the US, due to specialty field, but after ca. 100-300 job applications per year I was hired as a part-time adjunct. I now bring home $40 more per week than I did on unemployment, but I am very VERY grateful to finally be working in my field!
I get along well with no credit! But it means any new car loan costs %12-%15 interest! So I have kept same old clunker for ten years, and it is 16 years old!
