A Parent’s Perspective

How things have changed. When my oldest went to college there was a lot of help from the school financially, and it was a private college! Then when the youngest went there was absolutely no help financially from the public school or our government except loans. What a difference.

So when our youngest went to school their was a big demand for her choice and it was supposed to grow in leaps and bounds. But when she graduated in 2009 that dream ended. She had government loans and private loans, and there was no other way that we could find except private loans and also parent loans. And most of this was for supplies and just basic living.

So in 2009 she was forced to move home and we took over all her payments. We were making it she was able to get a part-time job that was supposed to be full time. But with the gas she still had no money. And she went 4 years for this. So she thought the only way to get a good job was go back to school for a MBA since all her friends with those degrees were employed. Then after 2 years of no job or part-time job she finally got a job that has to do with both degrees and allows her to still finish her schooling.

Yet she doesn’t make enough to pay all her bills but most of them. Except her government loan payments are not due until she graduates in maybe 2 more years. So she will probably be at 100,000.00 before she is done. Yet if she didn`t go back to school she would probably be looking for a job yet.

While this went on I lost my good paying job our factory went down due to management stealing our money. So fortunately I got a job but making half as much. So now we are worried about how she is going to make her payments once she graduates with her MBA on her government loans.

So help is really needed! Not handouts, but the economy is different and no one was prepared for this to happen and the loan institutions do prey on these young adults who are just trying to get an education and a job. There really aren’t jobs out there in our area of the country that pays enough for these kind of payments. The jobs are missing in our area so you can say work anything and pay it off but if there are no jobs that is really hard to do. When looking for a job you have to have experience and how do you get that if you can’t find a job?
