Drowning and Sadly Dragging my Family Down with Me

I owe about $20,000 in student loans to sallie mae for my private loans and $20,000 for my federal loans, which come to find out have been sold to sallie mae also. After graduating I went to work in social services with a passion to help those who lived with far less than what I grew up with; I feel that everyone deserves the opportunity to have security. Unfortunately, in this country 1.) the majority are too comfortable with the status quo to care about people who struggle daily to feed themselves or their kids and have to choose between a utility bill and rent and 2.) think that people who go into social services (like teachers) do it because we love what we do; which, is true, don’t get me wrong, but they think we love it so much that our hard work doesn’t need to be paid what it’s truly worth. Unfortunately due to a criminal lack of concern for the poor in this country and the people working alongside them every day, I have been struggling to pay my student loan debt back. I was unable to maintain all my bills, had to move back with my parents who actually moved out of the area so I had to leave my job, and I am now working only a part time job (that in the area in which I now live, am extremely blessed to have). Instead of putting off paying my student loans my parents have had to step in and help, which they ultimately can’t afford themselves. See their credit is tied into my student loan debt because I needed co-signers to get loans in the first place. So not only are they over $100,000 in student loan debt so that their three children could get a decent education, they are now helping me with the student loans I had to take out to help pay for my education as well. I’m unable to pay my student loans at present, have to resort to my parents paying them for me and even if bankruptcy were an option, I wouldn’t be able to because it would ultimately affect my parents credit score. To hell with my credit score at this point, I’m tired of dragging my parents down in this cesspool of debt. I don’t need a way out… my PARENTS need a way out of this indentured servitude!
