NEW YORK PREMIERE OF ‘FOR PROFIT’ TO FEATURE PANEL DISCUSSION ON STUDENT LOAN DEBT
NEW YORK—The New York City premiere of the new play ‘For Profit’ will feature a panel discussion following the March 13, 2024 production. *Panelists are set to include Robert Applebaum, stef Gray and Rae Roca, leaders in the student loan reform movement and members of occupystudentdebt.org.
Applebaum, founder of http://www.forgivestudentloandebt.com/ and a Staten Island attorney, is a student loan reform advocate and has over half a million supporters for his proposal to forgive student loan debt in order to stimulate the economy.
Gray, member of OccupyStudentDebt.com, is running a successful petition campaign in coordination with Change.org. The petition, with over 100,000 signatures, urges Sallie Mae to eliminate a $50 fee charged to borrowers struggling to pay back their private loans, which disproportionately penalizes the unemployed and underemployed.
Roca, founder of Loan Reform Now and member of OccupyStudentDebt.com, was recently featured in Pluck Magazine’s list of helpful links for struggling borrowers. Loan Reform Now is also one of the organizations leading the charge for passage of HR 2028, the bill which would restore bankruptcy protections to private student loans.
The panel will address the overarching issues associated with for-profit universities, student debt, and predatory lending practices as well as educate and provide resources for protection and ways out of student debt for those in attendance. The panel will also take questions from the audience.
